Russell Gregory

"After a relatively stable childhood and youth I finally settled, almost by accident, in Stoke-on-Trent, an area which, in spite of its still tangible heritage and identity, attracts and digests the unexpecting by virtue of it’s beguiling torpor and profound sense of post-industrial drift.

I suppose it is the observation of Stoke’s characters and backdrop which informs my work the most… the fleeting glimpses of their stories and yearnings; the interface between the austerity of what they choose to show, and the dreamworld where all human thought resides when allowed.

Such an exploration necessarily engenders a jostling variety of stylistic responses, as shifting and uneasy as the 21st century itself. It is both joy and anguish to feel compelled to portray that restless everyday shuffle. Even if you never…quite…succeed."
